I was commissioned to do a portrait of Matthew Mead's Yorkie, "Oscar," this summer, he is one of the editors of the magazine. It is quite a thrill to have my work recognized...well, it's actually the second time. I still love painting Newfs after having lived with one, Lewis, for 11 years. From a distance this appears to be a black dog on black, but up close you can see that there are primary colors used for highlights and shading. This is approx. 9 x 12" on black charcoal paper.

These lovely dogs were quite a pair. They belong to a friend of mine, Laurie, who also has Morgans. She wasn't sure about this photo as something to work from, but I just loved it. It is very natural and so unlike the "posed" photos so often used.

I'll need to get a better photo of this piece as soon as the sun makes an appearance today, but I think I am finished. I ended up removing what was a bannister from a porch on the right of the painting because it just didn't seem to add anything to the composition and may have, in fact, been a bit distracting. I wanted the focus to be on Abby & Ivy, so I also lightened up the background a bit. Overall I am really pleased with how this piece turned out! Both these girls are such beautiful dogs, it's been a pleasure having them spend some time with me in my studio :) If you are interested in having a painting done of your pet, feel free to email me!

This is a gorgeous Australian Cattle Dog named Bailey...I absolutely LOVE the colors in a Cattle Dog's fur...it's one of God's masterpieces for sure!

Here is a little bit about Bailey:

We got Bailey 12 years ago from East Texas. She had been under a house that caught on fire. The mama dog pulled her out along with the rest of the pups too. She is well behaved, playful and makes us smile as she always has a smile on her face. She loves to cool her paws in the pool on hot Texas days. She is also the peacekeeper among our dogs (we have 3). She is very loyal and keeps a constant eye on our 9 year old twins whenever they play outside.
She is our Bailey aka Bay Bay and we love her very much!

With our recent move among other things, I fell a bit behind in commissions but was finally able to get this piece finished for the winner of the past Charity Picnic/Auction held by Westie Rescue of OC & Beyond. I wanted the focus to stay on the Westie in this piece so I made sure to keep the banister a bit of a muted shade of white such that the Westie would in many ways 'pop' out of the painting. I may replace the photo in the next day or two as it is quite windy here in Michigan and I don't want to risk taking this piece outside to photograph as it is still wet. Today was a good day, I'm starting to feel a bit better after my recent dental work and was able to get some more work done on this Westie commissioned portrait I started a few weeks ago. I actually have four Westie portraits that I'm working on...I'm thinking pretty soon I may just start to get type-cast as the 'Westie artist', not that I would mind, I really enjoy painting Westies :o) I don't actually own a Westie, my Godmother does, and I have done charity work for a number of Westie rescue groups, but my 2 dogs are not too fond of the smaller pups. I actually have a New Zealand Huntaway/Kelpie (Taffy) and a Yellow Lab/Stumpy-Tailed Red Heeler (Jedha). Both were rescued off the streets of Cairns in Australia by my Aussie husband. We had them flown to Michigan last July all the way from Sydney as we would never have dreamed of leaving them behind!Their blog is Aussie Dogs Up & Over~Jedha & Taffy's Adventures in America :o)

Promise the Chocolate Lab from Oklahoma Lab rescue

I absolutely loved painting this Lab today. I wanted to cature his excitement, his joy. I believe I succeded.

This painting is oil on gessoed masonite panel size 12" x 12". The background is a stronger yellow and it really brought out the glow on the Lab. I then had to frame it. Sometimes a piece just calls to be framed so I literally grabbed the frame off the wall transfering the pinting in this to another frame. Thankfully I had another frame.

This is a piece I struggled with in the beginning, but absolutely fell in love with by the end! I think all the wrinkles seemed a bit intimidating, but once I plunged in and started to look at everything in terms of shape and color it all seemed to come together. I found that Pugs also have quite an interesting color to their fur, so I played around a bit with various shades of umber mixed with white and a touch of cream. I'm really pleased with how this piece turned out and especially because it is for a wonderful friend of mine, Tammi Kelts. I will need to replace the photo tomorrow as I ran out of sunlight today.

I do not understand how someone could leave this little guy behind, whatever the case may be, heck my husband and I moved literally halfway around the world from Australia to Michigan and there was NO WAY we would've ever considered leaving our 2 dogs behind! Her name is Karry Johnson and she is a member of the International Guild of Miniature Artisans. Besides painting dogs, she paints beautiful landscapes, portraits, master studies, horses, and much more. You can view samples of her work here. My brother Jon and I were in Washington last summer, visiting a rancher who raised horses. There was a whole conversation going on, but this little drama was happening in the background as I was snapping photos. The colt was clearly trying to get this dog's attention!

This is a painting of our Golden Retriever mix, "Matilda". My husband and I found her and her sister when they were puppies. They had been abandoned. "Matilda", has been very popular on Ebay. I have used her as a subject many times because she has such a wonderful personality.

A New Lab Rescue

This was fun today. Other then ACEO's this is one of the smallest portrait I have painted. I enjoyed it totally.

I have been doing one a day to help Lab rescues donating a portion of the proceeds to the Organization. Living myself with three I know some people have no idea how smart they are, as in cunning, and how strong they can be. Constant training is a must and finding them "jobs" to do to keep them occupied. "Watch for the mailman" keeps then at the front door looking out for hours. Their barking non stop and leaping on the metal screen door lets me know he hs arrived. We need to perfect that one.

Boys on the Beach

These are Azawaks Sighthounds from Africa. They live in Scotland. The owner sent me pictures of her boys running on the beach last summer and I did a 24 x 48 inch painting for her. With her connections I was honored to see it on the cover of the Winter Issue of Sighthound Magazine in December.

I didn't know anything about this breed and did some reading before I started painting....The muscles and movements remind me of horses and I think that is why I loved doing the piece!

Hogan.a Tribute

You never know where you will make a friend. Someone emailed and asked for an item I was selling on ebay and we got into a "discussion" on whether the Patriots would beat the Packers. I am a die-hard Pats fan and Jim, a Cheesehead. So we made a wager..I would do a group painting for him of his three dogs if the Pats won and if the Packers.ha.won?? He would send me Pastees and cheese from WI.

Well...they never went to the Super Bowl that year but I painted his dogs and he sent me pastees and cheese.

This is beloved Hogan who went to the Bridge recently and needless to say he is missed terribly.This is for you Jim and Jackie...thanks for the cheese and the friendship.

Toby 20" x 20" Finished Commission

A few months ago our youngest Lab, Sammy, ate and swallowed whole a half of a corn cob. Oh yes!!! Emergency surgery. So many people helped with the cost and in return I did paintings of their Labs, cats or whatever they wished. We will be forever greatful.

I have 3 to go I believe. They may be the lucky ones..it seems the more I'm painting the better they get. Yes I'm very pleased how this one turned out...Thanks for looking...chat later. Sheila

Thanks Lara for putting this together! I've looked at all the websites of all the members and I gotta say, I am honored to be in such illustrious company. There's a nice variety of styles, too!

I work mainly in oil pencil, watercolor, or pastel like this Bernese Mountain Dog, but I'm always dabbling in other mediums and trying new stuff. I am betting that this group will be great inspiration.

Hi! I'm Sheila Wedegis. I've been specializing in painting Labs in oil since I got my first Lab 9 years ago. Along with Sophie, we have Fergus, 8 and Sammy 3. You'll be hearing about them off and on since they are my main subjects.

Today marks the beginning of a group I had wanted to bring together for some time, Dog Artists United. It is a select group of artists who paint dogs (as well as other subjects) and who happen to be some of the finest painters in the world. The group will be kept small, and each artist represented will be of a certain level of craftsmanship. I'm excited to bring such wonderful artists together as Nancy Bailey, Sandy Byers, Jerry Hunsinger, Karry Johnson, Anna Usacheva, Akiko Watanabe, Sheila Wedegis, and myself, Lara Harris.
